![]() ![]() The calculus has shifted: it’s not as easy to bury cases as it once was, and the costs of doing so are higher. Universities responding to new pressure by the federal government and to activists (who Yoffe gives no credit to in explaining why universities are taking this seriously, or why the federal government is continuing to pursue the issue) by hiring new staff to investigate complaints makes sense in this context. Part of the point of the movie – and one of the reasons why I think it makes a useful organizational case study – is to show how all of the bureaucratic systems put in place are not designed to provide resources for victims, but rather to protect the institution. In fact, it would almost have to be that way.Ĥ) The lack of mention of the “Dear Colleague” letter and the circa 2011 push by Obama administration to take action on sexual assault at colleges is a fair critique, and one that was made by the experts I watched the film with.ĥ) “The Chronicle of Higher Education notes that “a shadow justice system” is being set up on campuses, with schools hiring new staff-often lawyers-to investigate and adjudicate sexual assault cases and that law firms are offering their services as freelance finders of fact, at a fee of $5,000 to $20,000 per investigation… But The Hunting Ground does not address the changes OCR has wrought in the ways campuses handle sexual assault accusations instead it declares there are virtually no resources for victims.” In other words, it’s totally consistent that 305 claims to the insurance company, you would have ~35% expulsions, and yet for the population of assault complaints as a whole you’d have a rate much, much lower. Here she seems to be cherry picking: the claims that end up at the insurance company are surely much more egregious than average, and so they are not comparable to broad claims at a school level. If she’s talking about some major development before that – beyond simply the big expansion in Title IX investigations by the Department of Education, which is a major subject of the film – I don’t know what it is.ģ) Yoffe cites statistics from a higher ed insurance company about the percentage of sexual assault claims that end in a punishment of expulsion or suspension. If she means something that happened in the past year, it’s a bit unfair – movies take time to make. It’s Yoffe, in other words, who is behind the times.Ģ) In terms of not responding to the most recent changes – I don’t know what she’s talking about. Yoffe bases her critique on studies citing the National Crime Victimization Survey, which have been determined to radically undercount sexual assault for a host of methodological reasons, to the point where an entire volume was put out by the National Research Council calling for new measurements. The percentage falls to something like 7-10% if you only count ‘forcible rape’, but for the broader definition of sexual assault (as used by the Bureau of Justice Statistics), the numbers range from 14-26% or so. But Yoffe’s ‘alarmist statistics’ critique is, as far as I know, wrong.Įlizabeth Armstrong and Jamie Budnick (both of whom I watched the documentary with) have a brief coming out soon at CCF that summarizes these findings and while they do fine a lot of debate about the 1-in-5 number, most sources agree that it’s reasonable. but actually the number is lower because universities make it hard to report and survivors have incentives not to report in the first place). if they say University X had 100 reported assaults in the last 10 years and expelled only 5 students, you get an impression of 5%. but only because we know the number of assaults reported is a dramatic undercount, so that ratio actually makes the schools look *more* proactive (e.g. You could maybe quibble with the use of stats that compare the number of sexual assault claims to the number of students expelled. So, in re: Yoffe’s criticism, in no particular order…ġ) “The film traffics in alarmist statistics and terrifying assertions, but fails to acknowledge both the recent changes in the way the government and universities approach sexual assault charges and the critiques that those changes go too far.” The statistics that the movie cites are, to my knowledge, reasonable and accurate. ![]()

Ideally I would be able to suppress the Bend Part feature as a LOD to place the pre-formed part view. Currently I can not do this without creating additional files (derived parts or iParts). ![]() However, I would like to detail this part to show both the pre-formed and formed states of the part on my drawing. If you have tried out the Autodesk Inventor 2022, and found the feature Model States a favorite, you can thank a fellow Autodesk Inventor user Curtis W. ![]() ![]() Furthermore, in a populations dynamics context, the state variable x must be nonnegative-valued to be biologically meaningful, corresponding to abundance, concentration or density, for example. The latter, in form of so-called integral projection models, are often employed to model populations with a continuous structure or stage-parameter, in which case the state space X of ( 1.1) is naturally a space of functions. In fact, the case \(\dim \,X = \infty \) is included in our development, and therefore, ( 1.1) can be used to model certain partial-difference and integro-difference equations. Since we seek to model a variety of structured populations, see for instance Caswell ( 2001), Cushing ( 1998), the dimension of the state-space X is not constrained. ![]() ![]() Stability is, of course, a fundamental consideration in all fields where dynamic modelling occurs and pertains to both the qualitative and quantitative long-term behaviour of solutions. Informally, boundedness and persistence are opposite properties, concerned with populations becoming neither too big, or too small, respectively. We comment that several persistence concepts and their properties have been studied in the literature (Franco et al. The notion of persistence relates to the survival of a population (or survival of certain stage-classes) and is relevant, for example, in the context of providing lower bounds for predicted yield in agriculture and horticulture. Boundedness is a necessary property of a sensible biological model and, moreover, is a key concept when seeking to understand the potential effects of an invasive species or mutant in a novel environment, see, for example, Eager et al. There is clear biological relevance for these three properties depending on the context. Our motivation for studying ( 1.1), and particularly the properties of boundedness, persistence and stability, is the potential for applications to population biology and theoretical ecology where models of the form ( 1.1) often arise. Depending on the context, u and v are interpreted as a control, input or disturbance. Here \(b \in X\) and \(c^* \in X^*\), the dual space of X, and f is a (typically nonlinear) real-valued function that may depend on a variable u which, along with v, denotes forcing. The difference equation ( 1.1) comprises a linear component Ax, where A is a bounded linear operator on the state-space X, assumed to be a Banach space, and a nonlinear component \(b f(u,c^* x)\). Where \(x^\nabla \) denotes the image of x under the left shift operator, that is, \(x^\nabla (t) = x(t 1)\) for all nonnegative integers t. The theory is applied to a number of examples from population dynamics. Since the underlying state-space may be infinite dimensional, our framework enables treatment of so-called integral projection models (IPMs). ![]() In particular, our stability concept incorporates the impact of potentially persistent forcing. We present sufficient conditions for the non-zero equilibrium to be stable in a sense which is strongly inspired by the input-to-state stability concept well-known in mathematical control theory. Under mild assumptions, the models under consideration naturally admit two equilibria when unforced: the origin and a unique non-zero equilibrium. We provide sufficient conditions under which the states of these models are bounded and persistent uniformly with respect to the forcing terms. The inclusion of forcing incorporates the effects of control actions (such as harvesting or breeding programmes), disturbances induced by seasonal or environmental variation, or migration. Boundedness, persistence and stability properties are considered for a class of nonlinear, possibly infinite-dimensional, forced difference equations which arise in a number of ecological and biological contexts. ![]() ![]() For now we won't remind you by replying your email as before.
